tao te ching ☯️ chapter 80

Let there be small

countries with few people.

Let the people have no use for

complicated machinery. Let them be

mindful of death so that they

don’t move too far from

their birthplaces.

If there be boats and carriages,

let there be nowhere to take them to.

If there are weapons, let there

be no occasion to display them.

Let the people’s

responsibilities be few enough

that they may remember them

by knotting a string.

Let them

enjoy their food,

be content with their clothes,

be satisfied with their homes,

and take pleasure in

their customs.

Though

the next country

may be close enough

to hear the barking of its dogs

and the crowing of its roosters,

let the people grow old and

die without feeling

compelled to

visit it.

ten years in the world of people

Weary, I yearn for the forest and hills;

Against my will, ten years have I spent

In the world of people.

Burning incense, I take leave of the assembly,

Shunning worldly affairs, I depart.

The mist invites me and

I know that it is time to rest.

Those of little talent are not

Guests fond of mountains.

Men of little virtue do not

Make companions for gathering leaves.

Should someone ask, “When will you come back?”

I would reply, “The white clouds and the green water

Are boundless and serene.”

A

good runner

leaves no tracks;

a good speaker makes no slips;

a good planner doesn’t have to scheme.

The best lock has no bolt, and no

one can open it. The best knot

uses no rope, and no

one can untie

it.

Thus

the master is always

good at saving people, and

doesn’t abandon anyone; always good

at conserving things, and doesn’t

waste anything. This is known

as “Following the

light.”

What is a good man but a bad man’s teacher?

What is a bad man but a good man’s charge?

It

doesn’t matter how

smart you are if you don’t

have the sense to honor your teachers

and cherish your responsibilities.

This is an essential

teaching of

tao.

contact with good and bad

the most authentic master I ever encountered

Something in prolonged contact with rouge eventually becomes red, something in prolonged contact with soot eventually becomes black. What I realize as I observe this is the tao of habituation to good and bad.

When you live with good people, what you always hear are good words and what you always see are good actions. Hearing and seeing good words and actions over a long period of time plants good seeds in your mind, so that you spontanteously become accustomed to goodness.

When you live with bad people, what you always hear are bad words and what you always see are bad actions. Hearing and seeing bad words and bad actions over a long period of time plants bad seeds in your mind, so that you naturally become accustomed to badness.

Good and bad people are said to be so by nature, but most become so through habit. Therefore wise people choose their associates carefully.
