if I had a mountain i would sit straight
all day contemplating nothing
but the way the wind blows maybe even
not that maybe just sit there
breathing in the quiet heart
whatever that is

Whenever we see
that goodness is lacking,
we may add to it from our own heart
and so complete the nobility of human nature.
This is done by patience, tolerance, kindness, forgiveness.
The lover of goodness loves every little sign of goodness.
He overlooks the faults and fills up the gaps by
pouring out love and supplying that
which is lacking. This is real
nobility of soul.

In the world,
something is most highly
honored, and it is not power and position;
something is most highly valued, and it is not gold
and jade; something has the most longevity,
and it is not a lifetime of a
thousand years.
To return your heart to its
original nature is most
highly honored.
translated by John S. Major & Sarah A. Queen

They say there is
a pure land where everything
is only mind, and that there’s a buddha of light
in your own body. Once that buddha of light appears,
mountains, rivers, earth, grass, trees, and forests
suddenly glow with a great light.
To see this,
you have to look inside
your own heart. Then what should
you be looking out for? When you are looking
for something that is only mind, what kind of special
features would it have? When you are looking for
the buddha of infinite light in your own body,
how would you recognize it?
Inside your own heart.
Trees shine with a great light.

The speech of the birds
and the voices of the insects are all
the secret of transmitting mind; the brilliance
of the flowers and colors of the grasses
are all writings on seeing
the Way.
To learn, it is necessary
to have your higher potential clarified
thoroughly and your heart clear as crystal.
Then you will find understanding
of mind whatever you
encounter.
