don’t long for heavens or fear hells

horse nose

detachment and non-abiding

Don’t

seek a Buddha,

don’t seek a teaching,

don’t seek a community.

Don’t seek virtue, knowledge,

intellectual understanding, and

so on. When feelings of defilement

and purity are ended, still don’t hold

to this non-seeking and consider it right.

Don’t dwell at the point of ending, and

don’t long for heavens or fear hells.

When you are unhindered by

bondage or freedom, then

this is called liberation

of mind and body in

all places.

everything born in this world is empty

hasui kawase

Students,

sit earnestly in zazen,

and you will realize that everything

born in this world is ultimately empty,

including oneself and the original face of existence.

All things indeed emerge out of emptiness. This original

formlessness is “Buddha,” and all other similar terms — Buddha-

nature, Buddhahood, Buddha-mind, Awakened One, Patriarch,

God — are merely different expressions for the same

emptiness. Misunderstand this and you

will end up distracted

for eons.

the sage has no set mind

melt and let go and rest

The sage has no set mind.

She adopts the concerns

of others as her own.

She is good to the good.

She is also good to the bad.

This is real goodness.

She trusts the trustworthy.

She also trusts the untrustworthy.

This is real trust.

The sage takes the minds

of the worldly and spins them around.

People drop their ideas and agendas,

and she guides them like

beloved children.

where does your mind come from?

the largest known structure in the universe

Good and evil all

arise from one’s own mind.

But tell me, besides your activities,

thoughts, and discrimination,
 what do you call

your own mind?
Where does your mind come from?

If you can discern where your own mind comes from,

then boundless karmic obstruction
 will be cleared

away instantly,
and all sorts of marvels will

come of themselves
 without

being sought.
