No mud, no
lotus.

Every time we smile,
all the generations of our ancestors,
our children, and the generations to come —
all of whom are within us — smile too. We practice
not just for ourselves, but for everyone,
and the stream of life
continues.

Life is filled with suffering,
but it is also filled with many wonders,
such as the blue sky, the sunshine, and the eyes of a baby.
Suffering is not enough. We must also be in touch
with the wonders of life. They are within us
and all around us, everywhere, in
every moment.

When we’re holding
the mental formations of despair
and suffering, we can look and see that
this has been born from that; suffering is born
because we are in touch with an image from
the past. The reality is that we are safe,
and we have the capacity to enjoy
the wonders of life in the
present moment.
When we recognize
that our suffering is based on images
instead of current reality, then living happily
in the present moment becomes
possible right away.

All we have to do is
be ourselves, fully and authentically.
We don’t have to run after anything. We already
contain the whole cosmos. We simply return to ourselves
through mindfulness, and touch the peace and joy
that are already present within us
and all around us.
I have arrived.
I am already home.
There is nothing to do.
Aimlessness, nonattainment,
is a wonderful practice.
