the presence of things as they are

javier vallhonrat

Break open a single

particle and all the sutras grow clear:

the great merit-wheel of the dharma turns as a whole.

The womb of a donkey gives birth to the noble horse.

Each time you look, you’ll see it new.

For zazen, a quiet room is suitable.

Eat and drink moderately. Cast aside all involvements

and cease all affairs. Do not think good or bad. Do not administer

pros and cons. Cease all the movements of the conscious mind,

the gauging of all thoughts and views. Have no designs on

becoming a buddha. Zazen has nothing whatever

to do with sitting or lying down.

Think of not thinking.

How do you think of not-thinking? Without thinking.

This in itself is the essential art of zazen. The zazen I speak of is not

learning meditation. It is simply the dharma-gate of repose and

bliss, the cultivation-authentication of totally culminated

enlightenment. It is the presence of

things as they are.

In its essence,

the Way is without words.

All this talking and pointing

and carrying on, only signposts.

Gather too many of them

and they’ll weigh you

down. Just be

silent.

Wei wu Wei Ching, Chapter 58

Stop searching for

phrases and chasing after words.

Take the backward step and turn the light inward.

Your body-mind of itself will drop off and your

original face will appear. If you want

to attain just this, immediately

practice just this.

to practice wholeheartedly

Don’t be concerned

with who is wise and who is stupid.

Do not discriminate the sharp from the dull.

To practice whole-heartedly is the true endeavor of the way.

Practice-realization is not defiled with specialness;

it is a matter for every day.

Be the same

all the way through:

quiet, still, at home. In the

absence of mind, all phenomena

can be seen for what they

are — empty. This is

freedom.

be free of all worldly affairs

stop your search

Do not look for a chance to go out.

But if necessary, going out is permitted once a month.

People in the past lived in the remote mountains and practiced

far away in the forests. Not only were they free of all worldly affairs,

but they abandoned all relationships. You should learn the heart of their

covering brilliance and obscuring traces. Now is the time for the fire

on your head to be wiped out. Is it not sad if you waste this time,

concerning yourself with secular affairs? The impermanent

is unreliable. Nobody knows where or when this

dew-like existence will drop into the grass.

Not recognizing impermanence is

truly regrettable.
