good runner
leaves no tracks;
a good speaker makes no slips;
a good planner doesn’t have to scheme.

one can open it. The best knot

one can untie

Thus
the master is always
good at saving people, and
doesn’t abandon anyone; always good
at conserving things, and doesn’t
waste anything. This is known
as “Following the
light.”
What is a good man but a bad man’s teacher?
What is a bad man but a good man’s charge?
It
doesn’t matter how
smart you are if you don’t
have the sense to honor your teachers
and cherish your responsibilities.

direct the mind toward emptiness
Generally speaking,
practical application of zen requires
detachment from thoughts. This method of zen
saves the most energy. It just requires you to detach from
emotional thoughts, and understand that there is nothing concrete
in the realms of desire, form, and formlessness; only then
can you apply zen practically. If you try to practice it
otherwise, it will seem bitterly painful
by comparison.

A hand
shifts our birdcages around.
Some are brought closer. Some move
apart. Do not try to reason it out.
Be conscious of who draws
you and who
not.

the mind unconcerned with name or gain
You
should therefore cease
from practice based on intellectual
understanding, pursuing words and following
after speech, and learn the backward step that turns
your light inwardly to illuminate your self. Body and mind
of themselves will drop away, and your original face
will be manifest. If you want to attain
suchness you should practice
suchness without
delay.
