When we reach
the ultimate stillness, we
joyfully become aware that this mind
of ours is empty, without any things,
and extends infinitely in
all directions.

Don’t
think you can attain
total awareness and whole enlightenment
without proper discipline and practice. This is egomania.
Appropriate rituals channel your emotions and life
energy toward the light. Without the discipline
to practice them, you will tumble
constantly backward into
darkness.
Here is
the great secret:
Just as high awareness
of the subtle truth is gained through
virtuous conduct and sustaining disciplines,
so also is it maintained through these
things. Highly evolved beings
know and respect the
truth of this.

Every day priests
minutely examine the dharma
and endlessly chant complicated sutras.
They should learn to read the love letters
sent by the wind and rain, the
snow and moon.
Do you
imagine the universe
is agitated? Go into the desert
at night and look out at the stars.
This practice should answer
the question.
The superior
person settles her mind as
the universe settles the stars in the sky.
By connecting her mind with the subtle origin,
she calms it. Once calmed, it naturally
expands and ultimately her mind
becomes as vast and
immeasurable as
the night
sky.

Every
little thing is
sent for something,
and in that thing there should be
happiness and the power to make happy.
Like the grasses showing tender faces
to each other, thus we should do,
for this was the wish of the
Grandfathers of the
World.
