warbler

This year

we have two gorgeous

yellow warblers nesting in the

honeysuckle bush. The other day I stuck

my head in the bush. The nestlings weigh one-twentieth

of an ounce, about the size of a honeybee. We stared

at each other, startled by our existence.

In a month or so, when they reach

the size of bumblebees they’ll

fly to Costa Rica without

a map.

You could

become a great horseman

and help to free yourself and this world

though only if you and prayer become sweet lovers.

It is a naive man who thinks we are not engaged in a fierce battle,

for I see and hear brave foot soldiers all around me going mad,

falling on the ground in excruciating pain. You could

become a victorious horseman and carry your

heart through this world like a life-giving

sun though only if you and God

become sweet

lovers.

Remind

yourself every morning,

every morning, every morning:

“I’m going to do something. I’ve made a

commitment.” Not for yourself,  but

beyond yourself. You belong to

the collective. Don’t go

wandering off or you

will perish.

My advice

to other disabled people would be,

concentrate on things your disability doesn’t

prevent you doing well, and don’t regret the things

it interferes with. Don’t be disabled

in spirit as well as physically.
