The opposite of poverty is not wealth — the opposite of poverty is justice.
April 3rd, 2010
The quote is
from Bryan Stevenson, director of
the Equal Justice Initiative, which works on behalf
of people who are marginalized in the criminal justice system
by poverty, race, or both. You can watch his appearance, along with
Michelle Alexander , on Bill Moyers Journal here. If you’re not aware, with
the 42nd anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. arriving
tomorrow, of the real state of prejudice against people of color in American
society and in our criminal justice system, this program will be an
eye-opener for you. Once your eyes are opened, I hope that
you will go make a recurring donation to EJI
so that they can continue their
critical work.
You notice this
blog has no ads on it. That’s so
it stays pretty and you aren’t distracted from
the lovely naked people and lovely poetry. If you come here
regularly for a little positive provocation, consider paying your dues now
by not blowing past this post, but instead taking two minutes to set it up so that
EJI can ding your credit card once a month for the price of a sandwich.
You won’t feel it; they very definitely will. If you can afford
the price of ten or a thousand sandwiches,
well, do the right
thing.
Thanks.
Now go watch that
program, yo.
